The Symbol of Christmas

The Symbol of Christmas
by: Susanna Miller

What is the symbol of Christmas?
Is it the decorative lights at night
Or perhaps it’s a Christmas tree
That twinkles with colorful lights

Is it the gifts that pile up high
Full of toys or expensive things
Is it the sweet sounds of carols
Or the feast that is fit fora king

Let me tell you the symbol of Christmas
It could start from a shack way afar
Where a family of seven
Feast on sardines from one single jar

Though their hungeris barely forgotten
They feel blessed that they all have a bond
They aregrateful for what little they have
As they pray for God’s blessings beyond

In a darkplace an old lady huddles
Barely moving from thefierce winter frost
There’s a knock on her old beaten door
T’was a child from the house just across

In her tiny hands she brings her a plate
With some turkey and stuffing aside
And some old wornout blanket along
To warm her in this cold winter night

In a home with magnificent view
A paternal figure stares through the glass
As his prodigal son came to view
His cold heart starts to soften at last

As they both asked forgiveness both ways
For the pain they incurred through the years
They embraced and had tears in their eyes
As the mutual respect reappears

So you see, the true symbol could be
In disguised where no glimmer is seen
It’s the kindness that comes from the heart
It’s the love that draws people within

It’s appreciating whatever we have
It’s forgiveness and starting anew
It’s the caring and sharing we give
It’s a humble heart honest and true

The true meaning andsymbol of Christmas
Shows its presence all over the world
As we follow His footsteps along
His true spirit shines out through us all
