One Gift

My friends inquired how much shopping I've done
Tis the time of the season when all seems to run
Last minute shopping takes a whole day at least
As you go through your list and make sure none was missed.
With four kids at home, I 'd get four lengthy lists
Of things that they want and things they have seen
But you see ,what I taught them is more precious indeed
In that long list they wrote, one gift will be received.
In that one gift alone comes a whole lot of love
And lessons they learn that will stand all above
To appreciate thingsnot based solely on cost
But the thoughts and the love that came with it the most.
They learn that my love is not measured by gifts
It's the day to day gestures of kindness that lifts
They learn that material things could be replaced
But the love of a mother has a much higher place.
Under our Christmas tree they stare with delight
Four gifts wrapped neatly with colors so bright
They shake and they guess and they eagerly wait
For Christmas to come so they can all stay up late
It took only one gift to bring joy to their heart
As I watch them in awe, I know I did my part
To appreciate, be grateful, be true and be humble
No gift in the whole world could replace this at all.
